ABSTRACT

Cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL) are a rare group of diseases caused by uncontrolled proliferation of T cells which belongs to mature T cell lymphoma having indolent nature. Two thirds of the CTCL are comprised of Mycosis Fungoides (MF) and Sezary Syndrome (SS). They are characterized by macules and patches which on later progresses to tumors or nodules with adenopathy and other organ infiltration. If left untreated the risk of developing infection increases with visceral involvement of skin, GI tract, lungs and adrenals. Diagnosis is done by histopathological appearance, cytogenetic analysis, etiology and the functional biology of neoplastic cells. Imaging techniques (MRI and CT) are widely done to assess the staging of disease and other tissue involvement. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy and retinoids have been in use since long time, but possess many side effects. According to Ayurveda, CTCL can be caused by Ahara like Virudha, Agantuja bhavas, Beeja-beejabhaga-beejabhagavayava dushti and Ojas/bala hani. The clinical features can be related with Kushta and in later stage simulates Dhatugata kushta and Granthi-arbuda. The etiopathogenesis of CTCL can be considered as formation of Ama, Agnimandhya, Srothovaigunya, and Balahani. Management will be preventive, curative and palliative with Sodhana, Samana and Rasayana therapies

ABSTRACT

Kanjika is a traditional Ayurvedic fermentation product prepares using 11 herbal ingredients in an aqueous media without the addition of any sweetening agents. The aim of the study was to analyse the biochemical changes happening throughout the process of fermentation in Kanjika and to identify the bioactive molecules formed during the fermentation process. Two batches of Kanjika were prepared. One batch was kept undisturbed throughout the fermentation process, while samples were drawn out at regular intervals from the other batch. A comparative evaluation of physicochemical parameters was done between the various samples drawn from the second batch of the formulation and the sample from the first batch after completion of fermentation. Further detailed analysis of the product before initiation of fermentation and after completion of fermentation was done using LC-MS. The two batches of Kanjika showed significant changes with regard to basic physicochemical parameters. It was found that in both the batches the pH was found to be highly acidic without any significant variations among the samples. Brix value was significantly high at the end of fermentation, in the sample from the undisturbed batch when compared to the sample from the disturbed batch.

ABSTRACT

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is estimated to be the fourth leading cause of disability in most of the countries. It is the most frequent joint disease with a prevalence of 22% to 39% in India. The objectives of the study were to assess the effect of OA of knee on activities of daily living using Western Ontario and McMasters University Osteoarthritis (WOMAC) index and treatment seeking behaviour of patient with OA of knee.Methods: Convenience sampling was used to find out patients of OA from 15th April to 1st June 2016 with cross-section type of study design. Data was collected and analyzed using MS Excel 2000.Results: In this study 16% of participants in underweight category and 79% participants in overweight category reported moderate to very severe pain on visual analogue score (VAS). Treatment seeking behaviour was quite poor in lower socio-economic class (SEC) as compared to upper SEC. 20.34% participants had extreme pain while walking. 9.74% participants experienced extreme level of morning stiffness while 18.72% had extreme difficulty while ascending stairs. 14.87% experienced extreme difficulty during getting standing position from sitting position.Conclusions: Moderate to severe pain on VAS was more common in overweight group compared to underweight group. Treatment seeking behaviour was quite poor in lower SEC as compared to upper SEC. 20.34% participants had extreme pain while walking. 14.87% experienced extreme difficulty during getting standing position from sitting position.
